How to Choose a Good Domain Name
Your domain name is your website's identity, business card, and thumbmark in cyberspace. Just like choosing your company name, you should take good care in choosing your domain name. Here are some tips on how to have a good name so that your website will generate traffic and sales.
Your company name itself makes a good candidate for your website's identity. However, if your company name is long, you might want to abbreviate it for the domain name. Be careful though because abbreviations can cause spelling confusion. If all else fails, try to look for key phrases and words that best describe your business. From there, you can mix and match so that it can form a unique name. In addition, make sure your domain name is unique. That means, it should not spell or sound similar to an existing name.
If you want to generate lots of traffic, use the ".com" generic top level domain, or TLD. This is the largest known and the most popular TLD in the world. It is also easy for your viewers to memorize. Next, your domain name should be easy to type. Your viewers would probably shy away if your name causes their fingers to cramp when they type on the keyboard. Lengthy names, punctuations such as hyphens and ampersands, numbers, and hard-to-type letters such as "q," "z," or "x" is best avoided altogether. This also goes with Roman numerals since these can be confused with letters. Short and simple names are preferred because they are easy to memorise and type.
Lastly, even when you think you have a good domain name, check with your registrant or web host if there are similar names in the Internet. This is an important step to undertake so you will not inadvertently infringe on someone else's copyright.
